The Francis Bacon show at @centrepompidou focuses on the period from the 1970s to his death in the 1990s. Seen individually they can appear a bit poor, but seen together like this you realise how deeply odd they are. Plus in the 1980s he started using spray cans, and when seen in reproduction these paintings look a bit too smooth, but in real life there’s so much texture.
