Bought some Conté crayons for the first time in ages yesterday. These things (in black only - B, 2B and 6B) basically got me through my Fine Art Foundation Course back in the early 1600s. Instant Frank Auerbachishness (along with some Seurat for quieter moments). These are softer than I remember though. Went to Sotheby’s today to see their pre-sale show of David Bowie’s personal art collection. It goes without saying I know but the man had such great taste, particularly where mid-20th century British art is concerned (which makes up at least 50% of the lots on show). Some real gems amongst them, not huge showy things but small, lovely ones - a Graham Sutherland thorn bush drawing, a little Harold Gilman interior, a tiny Euan Uglow… the list goes on and on.
